MTV is an American music channel which was first launched in 1981 and is a unit of the Viacom Media Networks. The original purpose of the channel was to air music videos and it's target demographic were young adults. However, this has changed within the rise of MTV, and now it is targeted towards adolescents as well as young adults.
The channel has expanded over time and not only has it became the most popular music video channel, but it has gained "sister channels" such as; MTV Hits, MTV Dance, MTV Classic and MTV Rocks.
